Inspired Independence Cake

Cheer on the good old USA by serving this colorful cake. Use a 6 in. round cake pan to bake the layers, and then use a simple piping technique to add decorative columns of icing shells that give this cake some stately appeal. It's perfect for any rose garden gala or 4th of July barbecue.

  1. Make layered cake. Prepare batter following recipe directions. Bake and cool five - 6 in. round layers of cake.
  2. Fill cake. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint portions red and blue. Reserve remaining white. Place first layer on cake circle. Use spatula and white icing to ice top of layer smooth and stack with next layer. Continue icing and adding layers.
  3. Decorate cake. Use spatula and white icing to ice top of cake into a spiral design. Starting at the top edge of cake, use tip 18, cut disposable decorating bag and red icing to pipe two shells in opposite direction of each other. Continue piping shells down the side of the cake. Use tip 18 and blue icing to pipe two rows of shells. Use tip 18 and reserved white icing to pipe two rows of shells. Repeat until side of cake is covered.
