  1. Bake and level cakes. Prepare cake batter according to recipe. Partially fill both pans by pouring 1 cup of cake batter into one half of ball tin and remaining batter into oblong pan. Bake and cool cakes on cooling grid. Ball cake should measure approximately 5-1/2 in. across.
  2. Tint icing. Combine Royal Blue, Violet and a touch of Black icing colors for blue shown. Combine Kelly Green, Leaf Green and Lemon Yellow icing colors for dark green color shown. Combine Lemon Yellow, Leaf Green and Kelly Green icing colors for light green color shown. Combine Teal, Royal Blue and a touch of Black icing colors for medium teal color shown. Combine Teal, Royal Blue and Black icing colors for midnight blue color shown.

    Use color combinations to tint icing in each of the following colors and amounts: 1 cup in medium teal, 1 cup in midnight blue, 1 cup in blue, 1 cup in light green and 1 cup in dark green. Reserve rest of icing white.

  3. Spatula ice cakes. Use a palette knife to ice top half of cake with medium teal and midnight blue, keeping the darker color on the outside edges and the lighter color in the center. Use palette knife to swipe from ends toward center, then from center toward ends to produce background effect. Use a palette knife and light green and dark green icings to ice the bottom half, following the example on the image.
  4. Prep ball cake. Cut cake circle to fit ball cake. Lightly ice with palette knife and white icing. Using pattern provided and a toothpick, transfer pattern onto ball cake.
  5. Position and decorate ball cake. Place ball cake on sheet pan. Fit two disposable decorating bags with decorating tips 4. Fill one with blue icing and the other with white icing. Pipe outlines, then fill in soccer ball using horizontal lines.
  6. Pipe grass. Fit two disposable decorating bags with decorating tips 233. Fill one with light green icing and one with dark green icing. Alternate colors to pipe grass along the bottom of cake. Pipe short grass around the center of the field, and longer grass toward the front edge of the cake.
  7. Pipe goal net. Using pattern provided as a reference to pipe goal net onto cake. Fit three disposable decorating bags with tips 3, 4 and 10 and fill with white icing. Use tip 10 to outline soccer net supports, beginning 2 in. from bottom of cake. Use tip 4 to pipe side supports beginning about 4 in. from bottom edge of cake. Use tip 3 to pipe net lines for net that is approximately 6-3/4 in. high.
