Shock and surprise your Halloween guests with this bat-tastic Striped Halloween Cake. Comb your cake to create evenly spaced indents, then fill in the grooves with orange and yellow frosting before smoothing out the sides. Attach some candy bats for a fun 3D effect that your friends and family will love!

  1. Make candy bats. Melt Black candy according to package instructions. Prepare decorating bag with melted black candy. Cut ¼ in. off tip of bag.

    Place bat template on cake board; cover with parchment paper. Following template, use melted candy to pipe 28 to 30 bats. Tap board lightly on surface to smooth out candy. Chill until set, about 15 minutes.

  2. Bake cake. Prepare cake mix following recipe instructions. Bake and cool three cake layers.
  3. Tint icing. Using confectioners’ sugar, stiffen 5 cups icing to medium consistency. Using Orange icing color, tint ½ cup white icing orange. Tint ½ cup icing yellow using color combination provided. Combine Lemon Yellow and Golden Yellow icing colors to get yellow color shown. Reserve remaining icing white.
  4. Ice cake. Level, fill and stack layers for 6 in. high cake. Using white icing, ice cake smooth. Using square cut blade, comb sides of cake.

    Prepare two decorating bags, separately, with orange and yellow icing. Cut ½ in. off tip of each bag.

    Alternating colors, fill in grooves of cake. Using icing smoother, smooth icing.

  5. Decorate cake. Position and attach bats to sides of cake using remaining white buttercream.
