Red Hot Red Velvet Cake

Your favorite red velvet cake gets all dressed up for Valentine's Day with a Cornelli lace pattern piped on the side. Use Round Decorating Tip 2 to pipe the fine pattern lines.

Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups batter of your favorite red velvet cake recipe or mix

  • Buttercream Frosting

  • Christmas Red Icing Color

  • Red-Red Icing Color

  • Tools

  • 6 x 2 in. Round Pan

  • Cake Leveler, Small, 10-Inch

  • Decorator Preferred 13 inch Angled Spatula

  • Plastic ruler

  • Toothpick

  • food-safe scissors

  • 12 in. Disposable Decorating Bags

  • Round Cake Decorating Tip 2

  1. Make layered cake. Prepare batter following recipe directions. Bake and cool cakes. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint portion red. Reserve remaining white. Torte, stack and fill for a 4-layer, 4 in. high cake.
  2. Decorate cake. Use spatula and white icing to ice cake smooth. Use plastic ruler and toothpick to mark four strips, each approximately 7/8 in. high with 1/4 in. space between each strip.

    Use tip 2, cut disposable decorating bag and red icing to pipe Cornelli lace in space marked for each cake layer.

  • How to Pipe Cornelli Lace

    The random lacy design of this free-form technique depends on the continuous curving lines that do not overlap or touch. Can be used in a small design area or on an entire cake surface. Good for wedding, anniversary and other formal event cakes, but lends itself to more casual themes, as well.
