How to Spatula Paint with Icing

A spatula can be used to add texture and pops of color to a cake. Begin with an iced cake. Prepare your color palette of tinted buttercreams before starting this project. Thin consistency icing is key to prevent too much dragging. Spatula painting can be used sparingly or to decorate a whole cake.

  1. Dip the edge of the spatula in colored icing.
  2. Press lightly on the cake and pull.

  3. Clean spatula in between colors and in between strokes to prevent excess buildup of buttercream.

    Hints:

    • Vary the height and placement of the streaks to create visual interest.
    • Place strokes on the bottom, top or randomly to add a creative touch.
