- Using medium consistency royal icing and a decorating bag fitted with tip 3, hold the bag at a slight angle (45°) to the right (or to the left for left-handed decorators).
- Starting at the top edge, touch the tip to the surface and squeeze the icing to attach it. Lift the tip slightly and, continuing with even pressure, move the tip down to the right (or down to the left for left-handed decorators) and around to form a loop.
- Repeat to complete a border, using steady even pressure.
- To end, stop the pressure and pull the tip away.

If you have to stop when piping your border to change positions, place your tip into the icing at the end of the “e” and continue piping to keep a smooth look.
The loops can be open, with the background showing through, or closed.
Experiment with different sized round tips to change the size of the loops. This technique can also be done with star tips.
You can also pipe the loops so they are standing up as if writing the letter “e” in cursive.
