How to Pipe a Fleur de Lis Vase

The fleur de lis is synonymous with anything French! It’s especially pretty when turned into a topiary for tiny drop flowers that are so easy to pipe. It’s an impressive decoration for the side of a cake or on cupcakes.

Ingredients

  • Royal Icing Recipe

  • Meringue Powder

  • Buttercream Icing Recipe

  • Desired Icing Colors

  • Tools

  • Disposable Decorating Bags

  • Standard Coupler

  • Drop Flower Decorating Tip 224

  • Waxed Paper

  • Round Decorating Tip 3

  • Cake Board

  • Star Decorating Tip 32

  1. One day in advance, pipe flowers. Prepare royal icing following recipe instructions. Tint as desired.

    Prepare decorating bag with coupler, royal icing and tip 224. Pipe swirl drop flowers on waxed or parchment paper-covered cake board (6 to 8 flowers are needed per fleur de lis).

    Switch to tip 3; pipe dot centers. Let flowers dry overnight.

  2. Pipe fleur de lis.Prepare buttercream icing following recipe instructions. Tint as desired.

    Prepare decorating bag with coupler, tip 32 and buttercream icing.

    Pipe vertical shell for center of fleur de lis. Pipe two elongated reverse shells on either side of center shell. The tails of all three shells should merge, forming a bottom point.

  3. Decorate fleur de lis.Position drop flowers on top of center shell. Switch to tip 3; pipe pull-out dot leaves between the flowers.

Notes

    • Experiment with different sized star or round tips to change the look of the fleur de lis vase..
    • Use consistent pressure as you pipe each shell so the three petals of the fleur de lis are similar in size.
