  1. Bake cake. Prepare cake batter following recipe instructions. Bake and cool three cake layers. Level, fill and stack layers for cake a little higher than 6 in. tall.
  2. Ice cake smooth using white icing.
  3. Tint icing. Tint ½ cup white icing navy blue using color combination provided. Combine Royal Blue, Rose and touch of Black icing colors to get navy blue color shown. Prepare decorating bag with tip 2 and navy icing.
  4. Decorate cake. Using ruler and toothpick, mark and pipe cake as follows.

Row 1 (triangles pointing down): Starting at top back of cake, use ruler and toothpick to mark two dots, ¼ in. apart. Mark third dot, ¾ in. from second dot. Mark fourth dot ¼ in. from third dot. Repeat around top of cake (one dot ¼ in. from previous, then ¾ in. from previous).

To mark point of triangles, use ruler to mark ½ in. down from center of each ¾ in. gap. Repeat around cake to complete row 1.

Row 2 (triangles pointing up): To mark point of triangles, use ruler to mark ¼ in. down from center of each ¼ in. gap. Repeat around cake.

To mark bottom line of triangles, use ruler to mark ½ in. down from previous ¼ in. mark. This is the center of your ¾ in. base line. Mark base line, ¾ in. wide. Repeat around cake.

Pipe Rows 1 and 2: Working with row 1 first, use navy icing with tip 2 to connect marks. The ¾ in. gap is the base of the triangle and the ¼ in. gap is the space between triangles.

Repeat to fill in row 2.

Row 3 (triangles pointing down): The bases of the triangles in row 3 should line up directly under the bases of the triangles in row 2, with a ¼ in. space in between the rows.

Using same method as above, outline and pipe triangles for row 3.

Row 4 (triangles pointing up): Using ruler, make mark ¾ in. below point of triangles in row 1. This is the point of the triangles in row 4.

To mark bottom line of triangles, use ruler to mark ½ in. down from ¾ in. mark. This is the center of your ¾ in. base line. Mark base line, ¾ in. wide. Repeat around cake.

    Pipe triangles for row 4.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until cake is completely covered.

    Insert candles into cake.
