Easy Painted Buttercream Flower Cake

You don't need a whole tip set to decorate this cake. Using an angled and tapered spatula, you can simply "paint" flowers on your dessert! Great for birthdays, bridal showers and more, this Easy Painted Buttercream Flower Cake makes a great project for beginners. Add a decorative border around the bottom of the cake if you wish, or just leave it as is for a blooming cake you'll be proud to show off!

  1. Bake cake. Prepare cake mix following recipe instructions. Bake and cool two cake layers. Trim both layers to 1½ in. high. Fill and stack for 3 in. high cake.
  2. Tint icing. Tint 3 cups icing dark blue and ¼ cup icing each light blue, purple, orange, red, lime green and dark green using color combinations provided. Combine Royal Blue, Violet and Black icing colors to get dark blue color shown. Combine Royal Blue and Violet icing colors to get light blue color shown. Combine Rose and Violet icing colors to get purple color shown. Combine Copper and Orange icing colors to get orange color shown. Combine Christmas Red and Burgundy icing colors to get red color shown. Combine Buttercup Yellow and Royal Blue icing colors to get lime green color shown. Combine Kelly Green and Black icing colors to get dark green color shown.

    Using Golden Yellow icing color, tint ¼ cup icing yellow.

    Reserve remaining icing white.

  3. Decorate cake. Using dark blue icing, ice cake smooth.

    Using light blue, purple, orange, red, lime green, dark green and yellow icing, paint flowers on top of cake using angled and tapered spatulas.

    Prepare decorating bag with tip 2 and white icing. Pipe dots on cake.
