  1. Make stars. Melt white candy according to package instructions. Prepare decorating bag with melted candy; cut ¼ in. tip off bag.

On waxed paper-covered board, pipe several small stars, ranging in size (about 50 to 55 needed). Chill until set, about 10 to 15 minutes.

Using decorating brush and cake paint, paint stars silver. Let dry, about 20 to 30 minutes.

  2. Bake cake. Prepare cake mix following recipe instructions. Bake and cool three cake layers. Level, fill and stack for 6 in. high cake.

Ice cake smooth, letting buttercream crust over.

  3. Make pattern. Print out CHEER pattern. Using pattern, cut out letters from waxed paper.

Using decorating brush, lightly coat back of letters with vegetable shortening. Position on cake.

  4. Decorate cake. Using spray bottle filled with water, lightly mist entire cake. Immediately cover entire cake with silver sanding sugars.

    Carefully remove letters.

Prepare decorating bag with tip 1M and white icing. Pipe swirls around top edge of cake. Top swirls with candy stars.
