  1. Bake and cool cake. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees or temperature specified by chosen cake recipe. Fully mix together batter. Pour cake batter into the prepared skull cake pan and then place the pan in the oven.

Bake the cake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, it should take a little over 30 minutes. When done, remove it from the oven and make sure the cake cools completely before decorating.

  2. Tint icing and prepare decorating bags. While the cake is baking, use the black icing color to tint 1½ cups of the creamy white decorator icing, black, while reserving the remaining white icing.

Prepare one decorating bag with tip 2 and 1/3 of black icing. Prepare a second decorating bag with the remainder of the black icing and cut a small tip in the bag.

  3. Decorate the cake. With the cut decorating bag, ice the sides of eyes, nose and mouth cavities of the cake with black icing using a spatula.

Next ice the top of the cake with the reserved white icing, allowing some black icing to mix in with the white.

Finally, using the decorating bag with tip 2, pipe random lines and smudges on the skull, spreading it across the cake with a spatula.
