Celebrate the love of a lifetime with this simply gorgeous flower ring cake. Poppies, roses, carnations and ranunculus make a sweet statement that will make mom smile when you present this cake to her at her Mother's Day brunch.

  1. Make cake. Bake and cool two 2-layer cakes. Level each cake to 1½ inches for a 3-in. tall cake. Use 4 cups of buttercream to assemble and spatula ice cake.
  2. Tint icing. Combine Rose and a touch of Burgundy icing colors to get bright pink color shown. Combine lesser amounts of Rose and a touch of Burgundy icing colors to get pale pink color shown. Combine Red-Red with Christmas Red icing colors to get red color shown. Combine Delphinium with Violet icing colors to get purple color shown. Using the color combinations provided, tint ½ cup of buttercream icing each bright and pale pink, ¾ cup red and ¼ cup purple. Use a small amount of Moss Green icing color to tint ½ cup of buttercream icing in pale green, and use a greater amount to tint ¼ cup in dark green. Use a touch of Buttercup Yellow icing color to tint ½ cup of buttercream icing in pale yellow.
  3. Assemble solid-color decorating bags. Fit four decorating bags with couplers and pair with icing and tips as follows: dark green icing with tips 103 and 3; bright pink icing with tips 104 and 4; pale pink with tips 104, 150 and 16; purple with tips 104 and 2. Place tip 8 directly into a decorating bag and fill with red icing. Place tip 104 into a decorating bag and fill with pale green icing.
  4. Assemble striped decorating bags. Fit a decorating bag with a coupler and stripe with yellow icing; fill with white icing. This bag will be used with tips 150, 14 and 4. Fit a decorating bag with remaining coupler and stripe with bright pink icing; fill with pale pink. This bag will be used with tips 1M and 104. Place tip 104 directly into a decorating bag and stripe with bright pink icing; fill with red.
  5. Make icing flowers on flower nail. Use tip 104 and bright pink/pale pink icing to pipe a rose. Use tip 104 and red/bright pink icing to pipe a smaller rose. Set aside. Use tip 104 and pale green icing to pipe three ranunculus flowers. Set aside. Use tip 104 and red/bright pink icing to pipe two poppies. Use tip 2 and purple icing to pipe poppy centers. Use tip 150 and pale pink icing to pipe a carnation. Use tip 150 and pale yellow icing to pipe two half carnations. Freeze flowers for 30 minutes, or until firm. Use the spatula to lift flowers from the squares and place along cake as shown.
  6. Pipe flowers and details on cake. Use tip 104 and purple icing to pipe three petal blossoms onto cake. Use tip 3 and dark green icing to pipe stems and two half-carnation calyxes. Use tip 103 and dark green icing to pipe dots for leaves. Use the following tips and icings to pipe stars in between larger flowers: bright pink/pale pink and tip 1M, pale yellow and tip 14, pale pink and tip 16. Use tip 8 and red icing and tip 4 and yellow icing to pipe dots. Use bright pink icing and tip 4 to pipe message.
