Chalkboard Pennant Cake

Use this unique chalkboard cake to send a celebratory message this summer!

  1. Make layered cakes. Prepare batter following recipe directions. Bake and cool two 6 in. round cakes, 2 in. high and two 8 in. round cakes, 3 in. high. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Crown, fill and stack 6 in. layers for a 2-layer cake, 4 in. high. Crown, torte, fill and stack 8 in. layers for a 2-layer cake, 6 in. high.
  2. Cover cakes with fondant. Use spatula and icing to lightly ice cakes. Cover cakes with black fondant. Stack cakes.
  3. Decorate cakes. For banner strings, use 9 in. fondant roller with pink guide rings to roll out orange fondant and purple fondant, separately, 1/16 in. thick. Use knife to cut an orange strip, 13 in. long x 3/16 in. wide and a purple strip, 25 in. long x 3/16 in. wide. Use damp brush to attach orange strip to 6 in. cake and purple strip to 8 in. cake.
  4. Make cake banner. For banner triangles, roll out pink, orange, yellow and purple fondant, separately, 1/16 in. thick. Cut 13 triangles in each color, 5/8 in. high x 5/8 in. wide. Use damp brush to attach triangles to cake, against edge of banner strings.

    Use black FoodWriter edible color marker to color two lollipop sticks. Insert sticks on an angle in top of cake. Cut one 7 in. piece of floss and one 9 in. piece. Tie floss to sticks. For banner, roll out remaining neon fondant colors, separately, 1/16 in. thick. Cut three diamonds in each color, 1 1/2 in. long x 3/4 in. wide at center. Fold diamonds over floss, alternating colors.

  5. Write message. Cut bright white Candy Melts candy wafers in half and place in refrigerator. Use candy wafer halves to write message on chalkboard cake. You may need to use a fresh chilled wafer for each letter.
