Candy Peacock Cupcake

  1. Melt candy. Melt white Candy Melts candy according to package directions. Reserve 1 1/2 oz. white. Using candy colors to tint 3 oz. blue, 3 oz. green, 1 1/2 oz. black, 1 1/2 oz. teal, and 1 1/2 oz. violet.

    Put each color into a cut decorating bag.

  2. Make tail. Place pattern on cake board; cover with parchment. Use melted green candy in cut decorating bag to pipe feather spines, tail base, and feather strands. Chill until firm, 10 to 15 minutes. Overpipe spines and base for added strength. Chill until firm, about 5 minutes. Use melted teal candy in cut decorating bag to outline feather center and fill in diamond shape at base of loop. Use melted violet candy in cut decorating bag to fill feather center. Use toothpick to drag teal into violet at top of diamond. Chill until firm, about 5 minutes. Make extra tails to allow for breakage; use melted candy to attach broken pieces if needed.
  3. Make head. Place pattern on cake board; cover with parchment. Use melted white candy in cut decorating bag to immediately pipe white beak/eye area. Chill until firm, about 5 minutes. Use melted black candy in cut decorating bag to pipe eye, using a toothpick to make a slight point at the front and back of eye. Use melted black candy in cut decorating bag to pipe crest feather spines. Chill until firm, 3 to 5 minutes. Use melted blue candy in cut decorating bag to pipe head and neck and to pipe crest feathers. Chill until firm, about 5 minutes.
  4. Make cupcakes. Prepare batter according to recipe directions. Bake and cool cupcakes in purple baking cups. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint sky blue to match blue candy. Use spatula and sky blue icing to ice cupcake smooth. Carefully insert head and tail pieces.
