Bake cupcakes. Prepare cake batter following recipe instructions. Bake and cool cupcakes in white cupcake liners.
Tint Icing. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe instructions. Combine Rose and Violet icing colors to get medium purple color shown. Combine Rose and Sky Blue icing colors to get light and medium magenta colors shown. Combine Kelly Green and Sky Blue icing colors to get green color shown. Combine Burgundy and Sky Blue icing colors to get dark purple color shown. Tint ½ cup icing each medium purple, light magenta, medium magenta, green and dark purple using color combinations provided.
Decorate cupcakes. Using spatula, swipe cupcakes with icing, alternating colors and cleaning off spatula between swipes.

A spatula can be used to add texture and pops of color to a cake. Begin with an iced cake. Prepare your color palette of tinted buttercreams before starting this project. Thin consistency icing is key to prevent too much dragging. Spatula painting can be used sparingly or to decorate a whole cake.
