Show off your shell-making skills with a cake that features row upon row of this popular decoration. It's a great contrast of full, deeply ridged shells made with tip 1M and tight, sharply defined shells made with tip 18.

  1. Make cake. Prepare batter following recipe directions. Bake and cool cake. Cake is 5 in. high (three layers: two 2 in. high, one 1 in. high). Place cake on foil-wrappedcake board.
  2. Ice cake. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint violet. Use spatula and violet icing to ice cake smooth.
  3. Decorate cake. Use cake marker to mark a line around cake, 2 1/2 in. from top edge. Use tip 1M and violet icing to pipe rows of shells at top and bottom borders and at center mark. Use tip 18 and violet icing to pipe shells between top and bottom borders and center row.
