  1. Make the strawberry filling: In a medium saucepan, combine strawberries, sugar, water, cornstarch and lemon juice.
  2. Bring mixture to boil, stirring occasionally.
  3. Once boiling, cook filling mixture for 13-15 minutes or until strawberries have broken down and mixture has thickened.
  4. Cool completely.
  5. Transfer to a large bowl and refrigerate for 3-4 hours before using.
  6. Make the cake: Bake two 8 in. cakes from your favorite yellow or white box mix, or your favorite recipe.
  7. Cool the cakes to room temperature, then level cakes if necessary.
  8. Place bottom layer on cake board or serving plate.
  9. Fill a decorating bag with the whipped topping and use a large round tip to pipe a line of icing around the outer edge of the cake layer. This will create a dam that will prevent the strawberry filling from seeping out.
  10. After piping the dam, add your strawberry filling and spread using an angled spatula.
  11. Place the second layer on top, making sure it is level. Make sure to place the top layer leveled side down ensuring the top of the cake is perfectly smooth and level.
  12. Start the icing process with the sides of the cake. Using a large angled spatula, add large dollops of icing to the side of the cake. Smooth the sides by holding the spatula against the side of the cake, with a slight angle pointing away from the cake. As you spread your icing, the angle will give the excess topping space to accumulate, making it easier to remove. Remove excess whipped topping and place it back in your bowl. Make sure the top is extra smooth so that it’s easier to decorate.
  13. To ice the top of the cake, add large dollops of icing to the top and spread to cover. To smooth top, pull the icing inward, from the edge of the cake toward the center, with your angled spatula.
  14. Using the Strawberry Dessert Drizzle, create small dots all over the top of your cake, avoiding the outer edge. Drag a toothpick or skewer through each Dessert Drizzle circle, creating a heart. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
