  1. NEEDED: See the Supply List for items you can purchase here. You will also need:
    • Your favorite cake mix or recipe (12-1/2 cups batter needed)
    • 5 mixing bowls
  2. Bake and cool cakes. Use your favorite cake mix or recipe to make 12-1/2 cups of batter. Bake and cool two 6 inch cake layers for a 4 inch high cake. Bake and cool two 8 inch cake layers, trimming each layer to 1-1/2 inches high for a 3 inch high cake.
  3. Ice and stack cakes. Prepare icing following recipe instructions. Reserve 3/4 cup icing. Use remaining 6-1/2 cups icing to fill and spatula-ice cakes. Prepare cake for stacked construction (see our Techniques tab).
  4. Decorate cake. Divide reserved 3/4 cup white icing equally among five mixing bowls. Tint icing teal, light green, orange, dark pink and peach following these color combinations:

    • Combine Teal with Kelly Green to get teal color shown
    • Combine Lemon Yellow with Moss Green to get light green color shown
    • Combine Orange with Pink to get orange color shown
    • Combine Burgundy with Pink to get dark pink color shown

Prepare five decorating bags with tip 12 and fill each with tinted icing.

Starting on side of top tier, pipe random dots in diagonal pattern across top cake. Vary colors and pressure to create dots of different colors and sizes. With clean spatula, apply pressure to dot and sweep spatula, creating a pulled dot effect. Repeat with remaining dots, sweeping in different directions to create pattern of random colors and sizes.

Helpful Tip: Make sure to clean your spatula between swipes so colors don’t bleed together.
