  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare a 9 inch pan with vegetable pan spray.
  2. Make topping. In a small bowl stir together the melted butter, brown sugar and ginger.
  3. Spread mixture in an even layer in the pan. Arrange pear slices over butter mixture and set aside.
  4. Make cake. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl.
  5. In a large bowl, beat sugar and butter with an electric mixer at medium speed until well combined.
  6. Add eggs and vanilla, beating until well-combined. Alternately add flour mixture and milk; mixing until just combined. Pour the cake batter over pear slices in the pan.
  7. Bake 37-39 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in pan for 5 minutes on a wire rack and then turn out onto a serving plate.
  8. Serve slightly warm with ice cream, if desired.
