Bright and Bold Buttercream Flower Cake

A little color can go a long way when it comes to cake decorating! By filling a decorating bag with two colors of icing, you can create blooming flowers and rosettes that add amazing detail to your decorations. Ingredients

  • Favorite Cake Mix or Recipe

  • Lemon Yellow Icing Color, 1 oz.

  • Ivory Icing Color, 1 oz.

  • Rose Icing Color, 1 oz. - Pink Food Coloring

  • Violet Icing Color, 1 oz. Gel Food Coloring

  • Golden Yellow Icing Color, 1 oz.

  • Orange Icing Color, 1 oz.

  • Christmas Red Icing Color, 1 oz.

  • Sky Blue Icing Color, 1 oz.

  • White Decorator Icing - 4.5 lb.

  1. Bake cake. Prepare cake batter following recipe instructions. Bake and cool two cake layers. Level, fill and stack for 4 in. high cake.
  2. Tint icing. Combine Lemon Yellow and Golden Yellow to get bright yellow color shown. Combine Rose and Sky Blue icing colors to get light, medium and dark magenta colors shown. Combine Orange and Christmas Red icing colors to get coral color shown. Combine Rose and Violet icing colors to get light and medium purple colors shown. Combine Orange, Lemon Yellow and Ivory icing colors to get peach color shown. Using color combinations provided, tint ¼ cup icing each bright yellow, light magenta, medium magenta, dark magenta, coral, light purple, medium purple and peach. Using Yellow icing color, tint ¼ cup icing yellow.
  3. Prepare decorating bags. Using tinted icing and decorating tips, prepare bags as follows:
    • Tip 2D: coral and medium magenta icing
    • Tip 1M: medium purple and dark magenta icing
    • Tip 2A: medium purple, medium magenta and light magenta icing
    • Tip 16: dark magenta and medium magenta icing
    • Tip 32: coral and peach icing
    • Tip 5: light purple icing
    • Tip 21: bright yellow, yellow and white icing
    • Tip 3: bright yellow, yellow and white icing
  4. Decorate cake. Ice cake smooth using white icing. On small plate, smear light purple and a few touches of dark magenta icing. Mix together a few times, being careful not to overmix. Using spatula, swipe sides of cake with tinted icing, getting more tinted icing with each swipe.

    Using prepared bags, pipe random assortment of stars, dots and rosettes around edge of cake.
