Rainbow Heart Cookies

These Rainbow Heart Cookies are all about the love of color! Using our tasty roll-out cookie dough recipe, then decorated with a black background and bright, colorful hearts made with royal icing, these striking cookies are a great addition to almost any party or celebration. Since these cookies use royal icing, they will need time to dry – so be sure to bake and decorate your cookies at least one day in advance so they have time to set.

  1. Bake cookies. Prepare cookie dough following recipe instructions. Roll out dough to 1/8 in. thickness. Using ruler and knife, cut out rectangles, measuring 1½ x 3½ in. in size. Bake and cool.
  2. Prepare royal icing. Prepare royal icing following recipe instructions. Tint 1/8 cup icing each bright red, bright blue, bright purple and bright pink using color combinations provided. Combine Red-Red and Christmas Red icing colors to get bright red color shown. Combine Royal Blue and Sky Blue icing colors to get bright blue color shown. Combine Violet and Burgundy icing colors to get bright purple color shown. Combine Burgundy and a touch of Violet icing colors to get bright pink color shown.

    Using Orange icing color, tint 1/8 cup icing orange. Using Lemon Yellow icing color, tint 1/8 cup icing yellow. Using Leaf Green icing color, tint 1/8 cup icing green.

    Using Black icing color, tint all remaining icing black.

    Thin all icing to 20 count consistency.

  3. Decorate cookies. Prepare decorating bag with black icing. Cut 3/8 in. off tip of bag. Outline and flow-in cookies. Let set, about 1 hour.

    Prepare seven decorating bags, separately, with remaining icing colors. Cut ¼ in. off tip of bag. Alternating colors, start at top of cookie and pipe two beads to form heart, spacing evenly down center of cookie.

    Allow to dry completely, about 24 hours.
