Orange and Clove Crisps

Orange and Clove Crisps
Capture the scent of an old-fashioned Christmas in a modern-day cookie. Sweet and citrusy orange blended with spicy clove make the perfect holiday treat, especially when shaped using your favorite cookie cutters.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/4 teaspoons ground cloves

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 1/4 cups firmly packed dark brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon orange zest

  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter, softened

  • 1 egg

  • 1/2 teaspoon orange extract

  • Wilton Sparkling Sugar

  • Tools

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In medium bowl, combine flour, cloves, baking soda and salt.
  3. In large bowl, beat brown sugar and orange zest on medium speed for 1 minute. Add butter and beat on low speed until light and fluffy. Add egg and orange extract; beat until well combined. Add flour mixture 1 cup at a time, scraping bottom and sides of bowl and beating well after each addition. Divide dough into 2 disks. Do not chill.
  4. On floured surface, roll each disc into a circle approximately 1/8 in. thick. Cut using 3 in. cookie cutter and place on cookie pan. Sprinkle with Sparkling Sugar. Reroll dough as necessary.
  5. Bake 9-11 minutes or until edges of cookies are lightly darkened and firm to the touch. Cool cookies on pan on cooling grid 3 minutes. Remove from pan; cool completely on grid.
