Easter Fault Line Cake

Forget decorating Easter eggs – put those cake decorating tools to work with this Easter Fault Line cake! Featuring bunnies, chicks, eggs and a rainbow of pastel swirls, this Easter Fault Line Cake is certainly a showstopper. Serve it after Easter brunch or add a few candles to the top baby’s first birthday.

  1. Bake cake.Prepare cake batter following recipe instructions. Bake and cool four cake layers. Trim each layer to 1½ in. high. Fill and stack layers for 7 in. high cake.

    Crumb coat cake. Chill for 1 hour.

  2. Tint Icing.Combine Violet and Pink icing colors to get purple color shown. Combine Teal and Kelly Green icing colors to get teal color shown.

    Tint 2 cups white icing purple using color combination provided.

    Using Pink icing color, tint 2 cups white icing pink.

    Tint 1 cup white icing teal using color combination provided. Using Yellow icing color, tint 1 cup white icing yellow.

    Reserve remaining icing white.

  3. Pipe colored stripes.Prepare five 12 in. decorating bags with couplers. Fill separately with purple, pink, teal, yellow and white icing. Fit all couplers with tip 6.

    Using ruler and toothpick, mark line around cake 4¼ in. from bottom. Mark second line around the cake 5¾ in. from bottom.

    Using white icing bag with tip 6, start at bottom of cake and pipe continuous lines around cake, stopping at 4¼ in. line. Switch to yellow icing with tip 6; pipe one line around cake. Repeat with one line of white icing.

    Continue pattern to second marked line with single lines of purple, white, teal, white, pink, white and yellow icing.

    At 5 ¾ in. line, switch back to white icing. Pipe continuous lines around remainder of cake and on top. Smooth top of cake with spatula.

    With light, even pressure, use icing smoother to smooth sides of cake, cleaning off icing smoother each time. Chill cake for 1 hour.

    Reserve remaining yellow, purple, teal and pink icing. Reserve white icing in bag with coupler.

  4. Ice top and bottom of cake.Prepare two 16 in. decorating bags with tip 789. Fill separately with pink and purple icing.

    Starting at bottom of cake, pipe continuous lines of purple icing around cake, stopping at bottom of striped color bar.

    Continue with pink icing above color bar and on top of cake. Smooth top with spatula.

    Using an icing smoother and light pressure, smooth sides of cake.

    Reserve remaining pink and purple icing.

  5. Decorate cake.Attach bunny icing decorations to the striped bar around the cake (you’ll need about 19 to fit around the whole cake).

    Attach chick icing decorations around bottom of cake (about 20 needed).

    Switch white icing bag to tip 2. Pipe cracked shells on bottom of each chick.

    Separate egg sprinkles from spring mix. Attach eggs randomly on purple icing.

    Prepare four 12 in. decorating bags with tip 1M. Fill separately with remaining yellow, pink, teal and purple icing.

    Alternating colors, pipe tight rope border around top edge of cake.
