Brush Embroidery Sunrise Cookies

These Brush Embroidery Sunrise Cookies are literal works of (edible) art! This amazing design begins with a fondant base, which is painted using icing colors and lemon extract. Once dried, use royal icing and a decorating brush to paint lovely embroidered designs on each treat. A beautiful cookie for Easter, Mother’s Day or any spring occasion, these Brush Embroidery Sunrise Cookies also dry hard for easy packaging and gifting.

  1. Bake cookies. Prepare cookie dough following recipe instructions. Roll out and cut dough using smooth side of largest (“A”) cut-out. Bake and cool.
  2. Make royal icing. Prepare royal icing following recipe instructions. Remove 1/2 cup icing and reserve at stiff consistency. Thin remaining icing to flooding consistency with piping gel.
  3. Make fondant circles. Roll out fondant to 1/8 in. thickness. Using same smooth side of “A” cut-out, cut fondant circles (you’ll need 1 circle per cookie).

    Using spatula and piping gel (you can also use buttercream), attach fondant circles to cookies.

  4. Paint fondant circles. Add small amounts of Pink and Orange icing colors to small bowl or plate; thin to paint consistency using lemon extract.

    Using decorating brushes, paint design on fondant circles.

    For gradient design, paint darker at the bottom and lighter towards the top.

    For striped design, paint stripes in pink, leaving space between. Fill in spaces with orange, blending where colors overlap.

    For splotched design, paint over entire fondant circle with lemon extract. While still wet, add pink and orange colors in sections, allowing color to pool and blend.

    Let dry completely.

  5. Add embroidery design. Prepare decorating bag with tip 3 and stiff royal icing. Pipe floral design, then use damp decorating brush to pull icing in a downward motion.

    Let cookies dry, about 3 to 4 hours.
